TMJ Therapy That Treats More Than the Jaw

Our TMJ physiotherapy in Mississauga looks at the bigger picture. We assess how the jaw interacts with the neck, shoulders, posture, and even your breathing. We also examine how stress may be contributing to muscle tension and guarding.

Our treatments are gentle, precise, and designed to help you function better in everyday life. Whether you’re dealing with jaw pain that flares during meetings or tension that keeps you up at night, our approach is built for real-world relief.

Our Approach to TMJ Physiotherapy

Here’s what you can expect from your experience at Art of Mobility:

  • Comprehensive Assessment: We assess jaw range of motion, muscle tone, posture, and overall movement quality. We also explore stress factors, clenching habits, and compensatory patterns.
  • Hands-On Treatment: Gentle manual therapy helps release tension in the jaw, face, neck, and upper shoulders. We restore proper joint mechanics through precise, pain-free techniques.
  • Client Education: You’ll leave each session knowing how to support your jaw health outside the clinic through daily habits, stretches, and self-care strategies.
  • Integrated Recovery: For complex cases, we combine jaw work with dry needling, soft tissue therapy, or movement coaching to create a full-circle recovery plan.

TMJ Physiotherapy Mississauga, Port Credit FAQs

The number of sessions required varies depending on the severity and duration of your TMJ symptoms. For mild or recent cases, clients may see noticeable improvement in as few as 3–5 sessions. More chronic, complex, or stress-related cases may benefit from 6–10 visits or periodic maintenance over time.

We reassess regularly and modify your treatment plan as needed. Some clients choose to return for occasional tune-ups during high-stress periods. Our aim is to help you reach independence as quickly as possible—with tools to manage symptoms on your own when therapy ends.

Yes, TMJ physiotherapy is safe and effective for both teens and adults, including older individuals. For younger clients, it’s often helpful in managing clenching or tension that arises during growth, orthodontic treatment, or high-stress school environments. For adults, TMJ therapy can address chronic dysfunction from years of poor posture, stress, or previous dental procedures.

We always adapt our treatment to each client’s age, comfort level, and ability to participate in care. If you’re unsure whether it’s appropriate for you or a family member, we’re happy to offer a consultation and answer specific concerns.

Yes, stress and anxiety are common contributors to TMJ dysfunction. When you’re under stress, your body may unconsciously clench the jaw, tighten facial muscles, or grind your teeth—especially during sleep. Over time, this repeated tension can overload the temporomandibular joint and surrounding muscles, leading to discomfort, fatigue, and limited mobility.

TMJ physiotherapy can help by calming muscle activity and retraining movement, but addressing emotional stressors is also essential. Many clients benefit from combining physical treatment with mindfulness, breathing techniques, or mental health support. In some cases, complementary therapies like Massage Therapy or Acupuncture may also provide relief by reducing muscle tension and promoting overall relaxation. Our team can help guide you to external resources if stress is a major factor.
