Stories That Inspire and Motivate.

What Is Dry Needling?

Dry needling is a clinical treatment that uses fine, sterile needles to deactivate myofascial trigger points, which are commonly known as muscle knots. These points often cause tightness, pain, or restricted movement and may even refer discomfort to other areas of the body.

Unlike acupuncture, which is based on traditional Chinese medicine, dry needling follows modern anatomical and neurological principles.

A needle is inserted directly into a tense or dysfunctional muscle, the technique stimulates a twitch response that helps the muscle relax and promotes blood flow to the area.

Our Approach to Dry Needling

Our process is grounded in clinical reasoning, movement science, and your personal goals. Here’s what to expect:

  • Comprehensive Assessment: We begin with a full-body movement screen and a targeted evaluation of your symptoms, posture, and muscle function.
  • Precise Needling: Using our assessment findings, we apply dry needling to the specific muscles creating tension or restricting movement.
  • Manual Therapy: Hands-on techniques are used alongside dry needling to enhance tissue release and mobility.
  • Functional Integration: We follow up with corrective exercises and movement retraining to lock in results and prevent the problem from recurring.
  • Progressive Education: You’ll leave with a clearer understanding of your body and the tools you need to support your recovery independently.

Dry Needling Toronto, Trinity Bellwoods FAQs

Most clients describe dry needling treatment as a brief, mild discomfort followed by a deep ache or twitch in the muscle. This twitch response signals the neuromuscular system reacting to the intramuscular insertion. While the sensation is short-lived, it often brings relief or a feeling of heaviness in the area.

Post-session soreness may occur for 24–48 hours—similar to how musculoskeletal tissues feel after exercise. Our physiotherapists explain each step so you feel informed and in control throughout your physiotherapy session.

Session count depends on your condition, symptom duration, and response to dry needling treatment. Some feel pain-free after one visit, while others with chronic pain or deeper spasm patterns may need multiple sessions. We reassess every 2–3 visits and adjust as needed. To ensure effective treatment, we often combine needling with mobility work or retraining as part of a full physiotherapy plan.

Dry needling is very safe when performed by trained physiotherapists, but it isn’t suitable for everyone. Conditions like bleeding disorders, immune compromise, or pregnancy require medical clearance first. We conduct a thorough intake to screen for any risks. Each insertion uses sterile, single-use needles and strict hygiene protocols. If you’re unsure, our team can help determine if this physiotherapy technique fits your needs.

Post-session care includes staying hydrated, moving gently, and avoiding intense activity. Soreness—especially in the ligament, neck, or jaw—is normal and manageable with heat or light activity.

Your physiotherapist will offer tailored aftercare, including stretches or mobility drills. Most notice better movement and less neck pain or chronic pain within 1–2 days. If discomfort lingers or you have questions, we’re here to support your recovery.
