Our approach to Dry Needling

Here’s what to expect when you work with us:

  • Comprehensive Assessment: We begin by evaluating your movement patterns, posture, and the muscular systems that may be contributing to pain or tension.
  • Precision-Driven Treatment: We use dry needling only where it’s clinically indicated—targeting specific muscles that are limiting your movement or creating discomfort.
  • Movement Integration: Corrective exercises help lock in the improvements, retraining your brain and body to move with more control and less tension.
  • Education That Empowers: We teach you how to manage your symptoms between sessions and reduce the risk of recurrence.

Although they may appear similar, dry needling and acupuncture are fundamentally different in purpose and approach. Acupuncture is based on traditional Chinese medicine and focuses on restoring energy flow through meridians. In contrast, dry needling is grounded in Western musculoskeletal and neuromuscular science.

It involves the stimulation of specific trigger points to release muscle tension, improve function, and support rehabilitation. The techniques, goals, and training required by a physiotherapist are distinct for each practice, making it important to choose the right approach for your needs—especially if you’re seeking pain relief or support with chronic pain in Mississauga.

For your dry needling session, wear loose, comfortable clothing that allows access to the treatment area. A tank top is ideal for upper body work, while shorts or stretchy pants are helpful for the hips and legs.

Our physiotherapists are trained to maintain your comfort and privacy, exposing only the area necessary for manual therapy or therapeutic needling. If you’re unsure, ask when you book—we want you to feel at ease during your physiotherapy appointment in Mississauga.

Yes, most clients return to daily activities after dry needling. Some mild soreness or fatigue may occur—similar to post-workout muscle stiffness—but this is a normal response to trigger point stimulation. We recommend avoiding intense exercise immediately after treatment, especially if your session focused on a high-tension area.

However, light movement or mobility work can support the rehabilitation process and help reduce pain. Your physiotherapist will provide customized aftercare advice based on your condition and response to treatment, helping you stay active while supporting long-term pain relief.

01
Relieve Deep Muscle Tension and Chronic Pain

Dry needling offers powerful relief for muscle tension that doesn't respond to stretching, massage, or rest. By targeting trigger points—those tight, overactive bands of muscle that cause local or referred pain—this treatment helps release restrictions at their source.

02
Improve Daily Function and Comfort

Muscles that are tight or inhibited can throw off your body's entire movement pattern. Dry needling helps restore balance by releasing those problem areas, allowing joints to move through their full range without being restricted.

03
Support Faster Recovery and Long-Term Performance

When used as part of a broader rehabilitation or performance plan, dry needling accelerates healing and helps retrain your muscles to move the right way again. By reducing neuromuscular tension and improving blood flow to injured or fatigued tissues, it supports faster recovery from acute injury, post-surgical rehab, or high training loads.
